10Y Preamplifier 'Landscape Style'

The portrait style chassis with the controls at the front and the connectors at the back receive a lot of positive feedback. Yet there are many who prefer the classic landscape chassis style. Here are some photos of a new preamp built in this format.

It shares the same basic circuit design as the recently built portrait 10Y line stages, like this one. The difference is the chassis only. This particular preamp will be used with the no compromise 6CB5A amp which was built last year.

Therefore the same wood and color scheme is applied. The PSU also got some vintage panel meters for voltage and current.

This chassis style is more cost effective than the portrait style and assembly is much easier since the entire circuit is mounted on the top plates.

Preamplifier in Mahogany

Hi!

A couple of weeks ago I showed a preamplifier in black/silver color combination. Today I'd like to  present a similar preamp combination in mahogany frames.

Phono section on the left, next the linestage and the two external power supplies on the right:

The circuit and tube choice is the same as the previous preamp.

In this system the preamp drives a pair of 211 mono amps.

Which in turn drive a beautiful speaker based on an Onken cabinet with GOTO drivers.

Back in Black

Hi!

Here some photos of a D3a LCR phono preamp and 10Y line stage in a black/silver color combination.

This preamplifer combination is the very similar to the previously shown D3a phono stage and 10Y line preamplifier. Separate phono (left) and line stage (right):

Phono and line both have external PSUs:

Although the PSUs look a like, they are quite different inside.

The complete preamplifier combination requires significant floorspace:

Each chassis is 27cm wide and 40cm deep. The bodies are 12cm high with parts and tubes extending out of the top. The PSUs reach the largest height with almost 30cm each.

The back sides:

The switches on the back of the phono allow selection of two different step up ratios of the silver MC step up which is integrated (LL1933Ag).

The 10Y tubes in the line stage:

The tube sockets are mounted on vibration damped sub plates.

Two DHT Phono Stages

Hi!

Just finished two phonostages with all directly heated triodes. Here some photos:

Both preamps share the same circuit which has already been presented here.

Also the internal construction is identical as shown here and here.

There is onlyone difference. The phono stage with the black covers uses a silver wound output transformer, the LL1660Ag.

Both preamps will be used with external MC step up transformers. Also the LCR RIAA will be in separate chassis.

The preamp with silver output transformer will be used with a silver MC step up transformer and the recently shown silver LCR RIAA.

Both preamps share the same sound character of all DHT amplification which has already been described here. The silver in the output transformer again make a remarkable difference. Stay tuned for a report on the sonic differences between the standard LL1660 and the silver version.

Two Single Ended 45 / 2A3 Amplifiers

Hi!

Two more 45 / 2A3 amplifiers finished. A two chassis amp (stereo with external PSU) using a directly heated driver tube, either a 26 or 10Y. And a single chassis amp with indirectly heated driver stage.

Both amps can be configured for using either a 45 or a 2A3 as output tube.

The two chassis amp uses Tango interstage and output transformers.

The PSU uses my usual bridge rectifier configuration with 4 6AX4 TV dampers working into a choke input filter.

The single chassis amp uses Lundahl interstage and output transformers.

This amp uses a bit simpler power supply with 2 6AX4 TV dampers.

The circuit is similar to the one of a 46 amplifier which I presented some time ago.
