Today we have completed the seventh year of producing ELROG tubes at Deutsche Elektronenröhren Manufaktur GmbH.

That is about twice as long as the former company ELROG Elektronenröhren GmbH & Co KG produced audio tubes. They started audio tube production in 2012 and stopped in early 2016 due to their insolvency.

Many thanks to all who support us by using our tubes and help to keep audio tube manufacturing alive in Germany.

This year we made the TM300B available also to users of other amplifiers than those built by me. The first batch released for general sale has been sold quickly. I would like to share some sound impressions about the TM300B and also the TM801A from users. This is what Ed of Los Angeles, USA has to say:

I wanted to let you know the TM300B and TM801A tubes got here. I’m blown away how good they are! I expected minor improvements, if at all, but they’re definitely worth the cost even given how expensive they are. I think the improvement is easily at least as much improvement as one gains from a good component upgrade. I don’t even have my speakers optimized yet but they sound like a million bucks. I know it’s somewhat cliché, but you get “more” of everything: string tone, breathiness to vocals, percussion impact and sustain, extension on both ends. Incredible.

Adrian from the UK got a pair of TM801A and this is what he wrote back:

I haven't had a chance to listen to them in detail, but my immediate impression is of a surprisingly different shape to the sound compared to the 10Y (or ER801A): lovely tight bass, wider sound stage. Certainly a positive change.

Next a sound impression from Hartmann from Italy who writes this about the ER801A-Mo:

The first impression is very good: strong, crystal clear, very balanced in terms of tone as well as imaging. Comparable to the change to a better lens on a very good camera.

Alex from the US writes about the TM300B:

Wow. The decay of notes just suspend in the air. They float in the air much longer than expected until they vanish into nothingness. Amazing micro detail. Zero sibilance.

You knocked it out the park. Just gave me goosebumps.

I’d like to describe the sound impressions I had while listening to the two TM tubes 300B and 801A in comparison to the regular ER tubes of the same type. My HiFi system has a digital source (CD): Acousticplan Drivemaster, Digidac and power supply. Amplification is done through Thomas Mayer Pre and Power amps, the 10Y Line Preamplifier and 300B Stereo Single Ended amplifier in tower chassis. Speakers are LaCampanella from Acapella. I would describe my system as very musical and rich in tone colors. Resolution and imaging are not its very best strengths but that is whining at a high level. I think the source is responsible for the resolution not being top notch.

The tubes which Thomas Mayer amplifiers came with were the Elrog ER tubes, ER300B and ER801A. When Thomas launched the TM300B for his customers, I was immediately interested to give them a listen in my system. He also included a pair of ER300B-Mo for the test. In comparison to the ER300B I realized a difference in tone colors, detail resolution, presence and a naturalness of tones as well as a more contoured, deeper bass. The TM300B did everything better. That was not just a nuance but clearly audible. Despite its high price the TM300B seems worth every penny. About the ER300B-Mo I can say that its very high resolution und good bass stand out. But I think it does not offer the beautiful tone colors of the TM tube. And that is very important for me personally. I decided to keep the TM300B in my system and asked Thomas to send the invoice. Since then I only listen with the TM300B.

A few weeks ago Thomas sent me a pair of the new TM801A for testing. Thomas mentioned that these emphasise the properties of the TM300B even further. And I have to say he was right. All the characteristics of the TM300B are further improved by the TM801A. Even though the ER801A already is a high resolution and musical and neutral sounding tube. But the TM801A is better in all aspects which are important to me.

And that is how I heard it. The bass is deep, sometimes tremendous (with organ music). Resolution is further increased. And this way it sounds more natural. A characteristic which I also value in the Thomas Mayer amplifiers. Higher resolution does not lead to an analytic sound which is often the case with other amplifiers. No, it leads to even more naturalness.

The sound appears airier and more spacy. There is more air between the instruments. Complex sound passages (symphonic orchestra) are presented in a more understandable way. Instruments and especially voices appear more natural, the onset of the brass section has more presence. With certain music voices can be very touching, music can become a ‘goose bump’ event. I do not want to miss these tubes anymore. Thanks Thomas for this sound experience.

Ich möchte hier meine Klangeindrücke beschreiben, die ich beim Hören der beiden TM-Röhren 300B und 801A gehabt habe, im Vergleich zu meinen bisherigen Röhren, den Elrog-ER-Röhren des gleichen Typs. Meine Hifi-Anlage besteht aus einer digitalen Quelle (CD), dem Acousticplan Drivemaster, Digidac und dem zugehörigen Netzteil. Die Verstärkung erfolgt über die beiden Thomas Mayer Vor- und Endstufen 10Y Hochpegel-Vorstufe und 300B Eintakt-Stereoendstufe als Tower. Die Lautsprecher sind die LaCampanella von Acapella. Wenn ich meine Anlage beschreiben müsste, würde ich sie als sehr musikalisch und klangfarbenstark bezeichnen, wobei die Auflösung und Räumlichkeit nicht an vorderster Stelle ist, aber das ist nur Jammern auf hohem Niveau. Die nicht ganz so hohe Auflösung verorte ich eher in der Quelle.

Die „Starter“-Röhren bei den beiden Thomas Mayer Verstärkern waren die Elrog-ER-Röhren, also die ER300B und die ER801A. Als Thomas seine neuen TM300B-Röhren für seine Kunden herausbrachte, war mein Interesse sofort geweckt, diese mal bei mir Probe zu hören. Er hat dem Paket neben der TM300B noch die ER300B-Mo beigelegt. Im Vergleich zur ER300B bemerkte ich bei der TM300B einen Unterschied in den Klangfarben, der Feinauflösung, der Strahlkraft und Natürlichkeit des Tons und den konturierteren tieferen Bass. Alles machte die TM300B besser. Das war nicht nur eine Nuance sondern das war schon deutlich hörbar. Obgleich des hohen Preises der TM300B scheint sie jeden Cent wert zu sein. Zur ER300B-Mo kann ich sagen, dass diese durch die sehr hohe Auflösung und den guten Bass auffällt. Sie bietet meiner Meinung aber nicht die sehr schönen Klangfarben, die die TM-Röhre bietet. Und das ist mir persönlich sehr wichtig. Ich entschied mich, die TM300B-Röhren in meiner Anlage zu belassen und Thomas, mir die Rechnung zu schicken. Seitdem höre ich ausschließlich mit der TM300B.

Nun hat mir Thomas vor wenigen Wochen ein Paar Röhren der neuen TM801A zum Testen geschickt. Und Thomas hatte angekündigt, dass diese Röhren die Eigenschaften der TM300B nochmal deutlich hervorheben würden. Und ich muss sagen, er hatte Recht. All die Eigenschaften, die die TM300B schon hatte, hat die TM801A nochmal verbessert. Dagegen ist ER801A eine schon sehr gut auflösende musikalisch und neutral klingende Röhre. Die TM801A ist aber in allen für mich wichtigen Kategorien besser.

Und so habe ich es gehört. Der Bass ist tief, mitunter auch gewaltig (bei Orgelmusik), die Auflösung ist nochmal höher. Und dadurch klingt sie auch natürlicher. Eine Eigenschaft, die ich bei den Thomas Mayer Verstärkern schätze. Höher Auflösung führt nicht zu analytischem Klang, wie es bei anderen oft der Fall ist, nein sie führt zu noch mehr Natürlichkeit. Der Klang wirkt luftig und räumlicher. Es ist sozusagen mehr Luft zwischen den Instrumenten. Ein komplexes Klanggeschehen (Sinfonie-Orchester) wird dadurch nachvollziehbarer dargestellt. Die Instrumente und vor allem Stimmen wirken natürlicher, Bläsersätze strahlen. Bei entsprechender Musik können Stimmen sehr ergreifend sein, Musik kann zum Gänsehauterlebnis werden. Ich möchte die Röhren nicht mehr missen. Danke Thomas für diese Klangerfahrung.
