The Compactron Digital to Analog Converter

Hi!

The first Compactron DAC is finished!

This is the first of a series of 3 different DACs with Compactron tubes.

It is a scaled down version of my DAC with 801A output tubes.

All in a single chassis.

This particular one has transformer coupled outputs and a transformer volume control. It has low output impedance, can drive long interconnects and power amps directly.

In addition to the volume controlled output there is also one with fixed level. Both have RCA and XLR jacks. The input signal can be selected from a USB connection or two separate Coax inputs.

The other upcoming versions will be without volume control. One with transformer coupled balanced outputs and the other with single ended RCA outputs.

Different color anodisation is available as well as wood side panels instead of the metal ones on this version.

All versions share the same chassis format: 434 by 434mm, 100mm high (plus feet). Also common among all versions is the use of tube rectification and choke input filtered supplies (also for the digital section)

Here a peek inside and some photos from the assembly steps.

First test of the unit without volume control:

The transformer volume controls are mounted behind the front plate.

I am very happy with the result!

Send an email if you are interested in such a DAC. Stay tuned for more Compactron electronics coming up.

Best regards

Thomas
